Submarine Cables Boost Papua New Guinea’s Digital Transformation with Google
Google plans to deploy strategic submarine cables in Papua New Guinea, aiming to strengthen digital infrastructure and enhance network resilience in the Pacific island nation, as part of a broader cooperation framework with Australia.
The project, valued at around $120 million and funded by Australia, will establish multiple submarine cables routes to ensure service continuity, reduce outage risks, and improve nationwide connectivity.
Officials said the submarine cables will connect northern and southern regions, as well as the autonomous Bougainville region, laying the groundwork for Papua New Guinea to emerge as a regional digital hub.
The country’s ICT minister described the initiative as a major step forward, highlighting its role in lowering internet costs, supporting economic growth, and expanding access to education and digital services through strong international partnerships.
The move reflects a broader global shift, as major technology companies increasingly take the lead in deploying undersea fiber networks to keep pace with rapidly growing data flows and digital demand.
